Bitcoin-friendly FamilyMart Taiwan attracts shoppers

BITCOINS are accepted at FamilyMart Taiwan’s 3,000 stores through its partnership with local wallet provider BitoEX.

Since October 24 last year, it has marked 500 bitcoin transactions.

Tourists in Taiwan are using bitcoins while the domestic bitcoin userbase is using bitcoins to purchase coupons at FamiPort terminals for utility bills, cinema tickets, parking fines or train tickets. Many local bitcoin users consist of gamers who use bitcoins to buy snacks late at night in the middle of a game, or to make online purchases.

BitoEX says it currently has over 40,000 Web wallet users and its customer base is growing by 30% YoY.
