SUNGEI WANG PLAZA wins two awards at Retail Asia Awards 2026
The transformation of the mall into an experiential and entertainment hub drove a 32.74% footfall increase.
SUNGEI WANG PLAZA won Community Mall of the Year - Malaysia and Entertainment Mall of the Year - Malaysia in the Retail Asia Awards 2026. The 49-year-old retail icon in Kuala Lumpur redefined its identity through bold programming and a community-first strategy. This reinvention shifted the mall from a traditional retail space to a dynamic social ecosystem where culture and experiences collide daily.
The mall repositioned itself as a community playground, which delivered 25.35% growth in annual retail performance. It achieved a high occupancy rate of 90.27% whilst facing competition from newer and larger developments. SUNGEI WANG PLAZA hosted flagship events like the largest Lantern Parade in Kuala Lumpur, which drew over 90,000 visitors in one day and generated RM3.7m in media value. It also served as a launch pad for youth culture, including eSports tournaments and K-pop dance competitions.
Food and beverage services played a significant role in this growth through the revitalisation of Wang Food Court. The mall expanded seating capacity by 35.2% and curated a new tenant mix. These changes increased occupancy in the dining area from 45.52% in 2024 to 86.54% in 2025. Consequently, F&B sales grew by over 40% as the space became a vibrant engagement zone for city-centre dining.
The mall further established its leadership by repurposing underutilised cinema space into the Megastar Arena. This 5,000-seat concert venue hosted over 80 headline concerts over two years, featuring international acts such as Boyz II Men and Akon. These events attracted more than 340,000 attendees with an average 85% occupancy. High-impact programming contributed to a 25% year-on-year increase in footfall, with peak weekends seeing traffic rises of up to 40%.
Sustainability remained a priority as SUNGEI WANG PLAZA embedded environmental and social initiatives into its core strategy. The mall participated in Earth Hour and collaborated with ERTH (Electronic Recycling Through Heroes) for e-waste recycling. It also organised a beach clean-up at Bagan Lalang that removed 121.4kg of waste. Social programmes included the Ramadan Food Contribution Programme, which distributed 100 iftar packs daily to support the local community.
