Rakuten eyes carbon neutrality by 2023

It is amongst the companies that joined the RE100 initiative.

The Rakuten Group, Inc. has announced its plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2023. 

In this light, the Group seeks to attain net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across Rakuten Group business operations. 

“Rakuten will further improve the efficiency of energy use and promote the transition to renewable energy in order to achieve carbon neutrality in 2023,” the Gorup said in a statement. 

“An initial priority will be energy transition for facilities owned by the company and facilities where Rakuten Group has direct power contracts.”

Starting in 2023, Rakuten plans to expand the number of Rakuten Mobile mobile network base stations that utilise solar power. 

Rakuten is amongst the companies that joined the RE100 initiative in December 2019. In 2021, it adopted 100% renewable energy for the Rakuten Group., Inc. electricity. 

It also completed its transition to 100% renewable energy for electricity used in its business operations at each sports stadium managed by Group companies Rakuten Baseball, Inc. and Rakuten Vissel Kobe, Inc. in 2022.
