What SEA, HK consumers plan to buy in the near future

Clothing or apparel and electronics were amongst the top items they want to purchase.

Clothing or apparel topped the category of items Southeast Asian consumers are planning to buy in the near future, averaging 53% in five markets surveyed, a report by Interactive Advertising Bureau Southeast Asia and India, and Carousell Media Group showed.

Around three in five consumers in Malaysia (59%), and the Philippines (60%) said that they are planning to buy clothing. A total of 54% in Singapore, 41% in Hong Kong, and 40% in Vietnam want to purchase clothing.

Electronics such as televisions, mobile devices, and smartwatches followed with an average of 50%, whilst household appliances and footwear averaged 34% and 30%, respectively.

Consumers who want to buy kitchenware in the region average 26%, accessories at 23%, and handbags, clutch and wallets and grooming items both at 22%. 

A total of 16% plan to buy furniture and jewellery, 14% want to purchase white goods, and luggage averaged 8%.

Other items included sports equipment, camping gear, pet supplies, musical instruments, books, decorations, music albums, baby items, toys, plants, and art supplies.

The report also showed that there is a “fairly even split” between respondents who buy higher-priced items as wanted or needed, regardless of price at 48%, and those who wait for sales season to buy higher-priced items at 45%.

Vietnam and Hong Kong consumers are less price-conscious, whilst respondents from Malaysia and the Philippines prefer to wait for higher-priced items to be on sale.

The survey involved 61,600 respondents from Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Hong Kong.
