Hong Kong's Harbour City welcomes “art invasion”

Renowned French urban artist Invade brought his art to Hong Kong once again with a new series of 32 mosaic artworks in September 2017. For the first time, he invaded Harbour City, the largest shopping mall in Hong Kong, installing 18 of them on various walls around the mall.

Apart from the signature “space invader” creations, other themed-designs such as “Anchor”, “Mermaid”, “Emojis” and more match with each location and echo the spirit of Harbour City, according to the mall. Invader's art reflects the pixeled eight-bit video games from the 1980s and his creations have been spotted in many prominent locations in various cities and countries globally.

Harbour City said it was surprised by the "invasion" and successfully contacted Invader afterwards. The mall invited the artist, who maintains a secret identity, for an official collaboration on development and charity fund raising and it is Invader’s inaugural partnership with a shopping mall. He tailor-designed a limited-edition umbrella by adapting one of the new mosaic designs in Harbour City -- the giant “Anchor” at Ocean Terminal Rooftop Carpark.

Invader’s cool and playful style is demonstrated on the long umbrella with a silver grey and yellow “Anchor” monogrammed on the charcoal black umbrella. Printed on the umbrella strip is the response of Harbour City to his “invasion”: “Dear Invader, your artworks are safe with us. Harbour City” to show the mall’s support and enthusiasm on art development. Shoppers can redeem the exclusive umbrella and support the Hong Kong Blood Cancer Foundation at the same time. More details are available here.

According to media reports, some of Invader’s artworks in other parts of Hong Kong were removed shortly after they appeared.
