FairPrice Group launches its most sustainable supermarket in Singapore

It is expected to have a 30% lower carbon footprint than the average FairPrice Supermarket in Singapore.

FairPrice Group (FPG) has officially opened its most sustainable supermarket at City Square Mall in Singapore.

The 24,000 square foot store, designed with a lower carbon footprint, features sustainability-first innovations and is a key milestone in FPG’s decarbonisation efforts.

Originally opened in 2009, the outlet now serves as a flagship for environmentally conscious retail.

The City Square Mall store incorporates environmentally friendly design elements, such as carbon-dioxide (CO2) refrigerants in store fridges, which significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fluorocarbon refrigerants. LED lighting is used throughout the store, cutting energy consumption by half compared to conventional lighting.

The store's fittings also prioritise sustainability, with counters, tables, and other fixtures made from recycled or sustainably sourced materials. Shopping carts and trolleys are crafted from recycled plastics, making this outlet a testing ground for future eco-friendly initiatives across all FairPrice stores.

The supermarket offers over 400 sustainable products, from eco-friendly household staples to items with reduced packaging. It also features more than 150 locally-farmed fresh products, ensuring fresher produce and reducing the carbon footprint associated with imports. Customers can also refill bottles of household cleaning liquids at the Bio-home Refillable Station, reducing single-use packaging.

To further engage customers, the store provides sustainability tips through in-store stickers and offers educational resources such as a Community Bag Rack and an Alba e-waste recycling bin. The store also partners with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Singapore to provide in-store sustainability education, a first for supermarkets in Singapore.

“This opening of our most sustainable supermarket represents our stride towards a greener future and will serve as a benchmark for how we incorporate care for the environment into our growth and expansion in the years to come while ensuring daily essentials remain within reach for all in Singapore,” said Vipul Chawla, group CEO of FairPrice Group.
