Sumimoto, BRG Group to open around 50 FujiMart stores in Vietnam by 2028

They plan to open five to 10 stores annually.

Tokyo-based Sumimoto Corporation and BRG Group Stock Company entered an agreement to expand the FujiMart grocery supermarket chain in Vietnam and open around 50 new stores by 2028.

In a statement, Sumimoto said that under the agreement, they plan to open five to 10 new stores yearly from financial year 2022, and establish a network of 50 stores in the country, including Ho Chi Minh City.

“In recent years, the overall grocery retail market in Vietnam has been expanding rapidly due to rising personal incomes and improved living standards bolstered by economic growth,” Sumimoto said.

“In addition, growing consumer awareness in areas of food security and safety, including hygiene measures taken to fight COVID-19 infections, has led to a shift from traditional retail outlets run by individual proprietors to modern stores, such as supermarkets and convenience stores which offer superior levels of safety and convenience,” it added.

The first FujiMart store in Vietnam was opened by Sumimoto and BRG Group in 2018 in Hanoi, with three that are currently operating. Sumimoto operates around 120 stores mainly in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Sumimoto said they will promote digital transformation and improve their operation efficiencies to meet the needs of customers in Vietnam.

It added that they are also working with BRG Group for the North Hanoi Smart City Project, to create a sustainable city in an urban area of 272 hectares in Dong Anh District. It will be developed in phases with subdivisions divided into phases one to five.
