Suntory Beverages to make 50% of its bottles from recycled materials

This is in line with its 2030 target to use 100% sustainable PET bottles.

Suntory Beverage & Food announced that it will make one in every two PET bottles used in Japan to be made from 100% recycled materials by volume.

This is in line with the Suntory Group’s target to use 100% sustainable PET bottles globally by 2030.

The Suntory Beverage & Food will gradually introduce the new “Bottles are resources! Towards a Sustainable Bottle” logo on all of its PET bottles in Japan, starting March 2022.

The company will also expand technologies and knowledge acquired in Japan to other countries to accelerate its efforts to achieve its 2030 target.

Last year, the company was able to use 100% recycled materials in 37% of its PET bottles by weight in Japan.

The company also switched all returnable glass bottle products used for on‐premise to 100% recycled PET bottles.

Achieving its 100% sustainable bottle ambition is more challenging in its Asia Pacific operations, particularly in Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia.

This is because the countries prohibit the use of recycled plastic contents in food containers, coupled with the weak infrastructure for the collection of used plastic.

In this light, the company will strengthen its efforts on recycling and plans to introduce the company’s first 100% recycled PET bottles in Vietnam in 2022.

It will also enhance efforts such as promoting waste segregation and recycling of PET plastic in Thailand in partnership with Wongpanit.
