Japan amongst top 3 AI patent publishers amidst consumer caution
Only 18% of Japanese adults adopt new technologies early.
Japan ranks amongst the top three publishers of artificial intelligence (AI) patents, alongside the United States and South Korea, according to a Mintel report.
Data shows that 18% of Japanese adults are amongst the first to try new technologies—the lowest rate amongst six major global markets. Whilst 49% of the population stays informed on global news, 26% believe AI assists in discovering new information.
In the beauty and fashion sector, 22% of consumers hold high expectations for AI, 67% remain neutral, and 10% report concerns.
Requirements for transparency and human oversight remain, with 37% of Japanese adults wanting labels on content created by AI. Amongst those concerned about AI issues, 46% state that humans must retain final authority for significant decisions.
Social factors also influence market expectations, as 67% of Japanese consumers believe social media creates pressure for children to look a certain way.
The report noted that Japanese consumers do not “hunt” for shortcuts or life hacks, instead paying price premiums for products that improve quality of life once a solution exists.
Companies such as Shiseido use market intelligence to inform business development, with new product concepts incorporating AI-monitored makeup models and tutorials from Japanese artists.
The Japanese government has also enacted an AI Act to regulate development and address concerns regarding data protection and malfunctions.
