Australian retailers urge action to ensure safety amidst Woolworths strike

ARA also stressed the need for uninterrupted access to essential food and grocery products.

The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) is calling on the United Workers Union (UWU) to consider the safety and wellbeing of staff, customers, and the community during ongoing industrial action at Woolworths supermarkets.

ARA Chief Industry Affairs Officer Fleur Brown stated that whilst industrial action is a right, it must be balanced to ensure workers and customers are protected.

“Everyone has the right to feel safe at work, and industrial action should not impede on workers wishing to carry out their everyday duties,” she said. “If an employee wishes to return to work, they should be able to do so without fear of retribution.”

With Christmas approaching, Brown stressed the need for uninterrupted access to essential food and grocery products. “This is the busiest period for retailers and shoppers which places great demand on the supply of these products with a flow-on effect to many Australians.”

She also warned of the broader economic impact, saying the dispute could have significant financial repercussions for the country.
