Aldi Australia trials self-checkout in Darlinghurst

More than half of its customers opted to use the new service.

Supermarket chain Aldi launched a trial of its self-checkout service in Darlinghurst,  Australia, according to a news release. This is the company’s first store to have received the technology, whilst nine other stores in NSW are planned to provide the same service.

The company found that more than half of its customers opted to use the new self-checkouts. “Shoppers also commented that they enjoyed the choice and appreciated the convenience of having a quick and easy option when only shopping for a few items,” said Aldi Australia’s store operations director Robert Eichfeld.

Further, Aldi is introducing baskets in all trial stores to aid these small and quick shops. This technology will require employees to assist and monitor customers’ use of self-checkouts and help with any issues, rather than working on the register.

After carefully assessing and considering the trial results, Aldi said that there is potential that self-checkouts will be rolled out to more ALDI stores nationally.
