Over two-thirds of largest fashion firms score low in sustainability

Only H&M scored high in the Fossil Free Fashion scorecard.

More than two-thirds of the largest companies in fashion scored a “D” or an “F” in the 2023 Fossil Free Fashion scorecard.

The scorecard measures the emissions of the company from its manufacturing operations amongst others.

“Only one brand, H&M, achieved a B- grade, after setting more ambitious targets and engaging actively on renewable energy in its supply chain – although the fast-fashion giant still has a long way to go,” the report read.

More than 90% of emissions of companies are from manufacturing, yet only five brands have so far made commitments to cut supply chain emissions– ASICS, H&M, Levi’s, Mammut, and REI.

Walmart, Richemont (Chloé), On Running, MEC, LVMH (Louis Vuitton), Chanel, and Boohoo had some of the weakest supply chain emissions targets.

Meanwhile, nearly half of the brands have committed to phase out on-site coal burning from their manufacturing.
