FairPrice Foundation wins at Retail Asia Awards 2026 for The Carbon Gallery

The carbon-focused experiential hub translates complex or abstract topicsinto engaging, tangible learning experiences.

FairPrice Foundation won ESG Initiative of the Year - Singapore at the Retail Asia Awards 2026. The recognition showcases the success of The Carbon Gallery, Asia’s first carbon-focused experiential hub that combines storytelling with interactive technology.

Opened to the public for free, the Gallery represents a commitment from FairPrice Group and its philanthropic arm, FairPrice Foundation, to make sustainability education accessible. The initiative brings carbon literacy into the heartlands to help visitors understand how daily lifestyle choices connect to climate change. Social enterprise Terra SG developed the Gallery with funding and support from Fairprice Foundation, and FairPrice Group, including funds collected from the government’s mandatedDisposable Carrier Bag Charge.

Officially launched in 2025, The Carbon Gallery exceeded its target and reached over 29,000 visitors in its inaugural year, comprising mostly students and families. The Carbon Gallery also complements the Singapore secondary school Geography curriculum and supports primary school sustainability and environmental learning, bridging classroom knowledge on the complex relationship between human and environmental systems with interactive, real-world experiences and examples.

At the Carbon Gallery, visitors learn about carbon’s role in their lives, the environmental impact of their everyday choices, and how they can help create a more sustainable future. Some of its key exhibits include:

The Carbon Cart – an interactive mini-supermarket display where visitors are challenged to ‘shop’ virtually for daily essentials within the limit of 60 ‘carbon coins’, encouraging them to consider the carbon cost of everyday products.

Eating a Little Better – a station with interactive games that spotlight the state of food wastage in Singapore, and teach visitors simple and practical ways that they can reduce food waste at home.

Choose Your 2050 – immersive “portals” where visitors experience what climate positive and negative futures could look like for the planet, encouraging them to reflect on the future they want to create.

Power for Change – an interactive web app that engages visitors with short questions throughout the Gallery to help them build their ‘sustainability persona’, providing personalised recommendations on how to live and act more sustainably.

Outside, a Microforest demonstrates how natural ecosystems act as carbon sinks. It was designed as a compact ecosystem housing miniature examples of an Agroforest and a Mangrove forest. Nearby, the Respite Gardens preserve the kampung-inspired landscape featuring edible plants alongside native banana trees that have been growing on the site since it was the former Loyang Primary School. The fauna reflects Terra SG’s and FairPrice Foundation’s intent to blend history, nature, and revitalisation into the Gallery’s design, with sustainability at the forefront.

Demonstrating The Carbon Gallery’s impact, post-visit surveys indicated that 100% of respondents gained a better understanding of carbon concepts, whilst 67.6% of visitors strongly agreed they could identify practical ways to reduce their carbon footprint.

The Carbon Gallery follows a series of initiatives by FairPrice Foundation and FairPrice Group to keep things easy on the planet across its operations, and within the communities it operates. These include the opening of FairPrice Group’s flagship sustainable supermarket at City Square Mall, and the launch of Start Strong, Stay Strong, Singapore’s first pre-school sustainability and nutrition education initiative.
