Diebold Nixdorf's DN Series™ EASY revolutionises retail and customer experience

The solution helps retailers respond to the ever-changing consumer needs in the retail industry.

Consumers in every market are getting more progressive than what businesses, particularly in the retail industry, think they are.

The rise of "on-demand", tech-enabled, and digitally-informed consumers have prompted retailers to change the way they offer their products to the market.

And with the pandemic happening globally, retailers are also taking up the challenge of addressing the consumers' need to control and manage their own transactions in their purchases.

Now that self-sufficiency is the "new normal", the movement towards online deliveries, cashless payments, and low-touch environments have inadvertently created a new type of revolution.

Diebold Nixdorf calls it the Storevolution™.

"Retail is undergoing a revolution,” said Hermann Wimmer, Senior Vice President for Global Retail at Diebold Nixdorf. “The DN Series EASY makes life easier for retailers and creates an exciting and new experience to consumers. This first-of-its-kind portfolio of solutions feature a platform-based approach that's built on a single technology platform.”

Vipin Kalra, Vice President and Managing Director for Asia Pacific Retail at Diebold Nixdorf puts it in a tangible way:

“DN Series EASY is a self-service solution that enables retailers to provide a variety of options, based on their individual business and checkout model. For instance, a security scale, a designated basket shelf, and cash or non cash payment. Behind the hardware is the software resource that connects to the rest of the store's point of sale, back office, stock, CRM system, and many other financial systems in the back-end.”

Built for the Storevolution, the DN Series EASY offers three key benefits to retailers: Modularity, Openness, and Availability.

Modularity

The device’s modularity allows retailers to customise the checkout mix based on the store's format.

“As you can see in the retail world, stores are transforming quite fast. You have an online store and a physical store. In a physical store, you have a small express store; you have a medium-sized store and then you have a very large, megamall sized store,” explained Kalra.

“Depending on the format and style, you can customise your solution by choosing what you want. For example, you can have a bigger screen, a side basket, a basket in front, or a bag-hanging area. All of those formats can be customised because of the modularity of the device.”

Availability

DN Series EASY guarantees 99.8% availability. This means less downtime, improved overall cost of ownership, and better efficiency both in store operations and the cost efficiency side of the equation.

“We can manage these machines remotely, so you don't have to wait for something to fail before you fix it. We can pre-emptively start to maintain the machine before it breaks down, knowing very well if a certain item or certain part or certain application is coming to the end of its life.

“Or when something breaks down, you can diagnose remotely and then send in the engineers to fix that particular part very quickly."

According to Kalra, the important point here is that retailers will spend less time thinking about and managing their hardware and software devices. This allows them to focus on serving their consumers while getting the benefit of reduced operation costs.

Openness

The device’s open architecture allows retailers to connect to their third-party software or hardware solutions. They also have the option to connect to third party point-of-sale software even while using Diebold Nixdorf’s hardware.

“If you look at the retail environment, most retailers have legacy infrastructure which comes in mostly software and hardware. They would like to phase out their old infrastructure and replace it with a new one.”

“By bringing this modularity and open system into their retail environment, they can start to run this new subsystem on a new platform we offer while still connecting to the old platform.

Eventually, one of the company’s main goals is to slowly phase out retailers’ old infrastructure, and move to a newer, smarter, and highly-effective framework that comes in hardware and software.

Despite the pandemic, Diebold Nixdorf looks to the future with high hopes.

“Retail is undergoing a revolution of sorts. We at Diebold Nixdorf have one common purpose in this time of great change: to empower the retail revolution, and to help our retail customers design, enable, and operate relevant consumer and staff journeys for the future.”
