Taiwan’s retail sales fell by 2.9% year-on-year in June to $13.3b (NT$390b), according to data released by the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
The decline was largely driven by a sharp 17.3% drop in motor vehicle and motorcycle sales, marking the steepest fall amongst all retail categories.
Sales in textiles and clothing also weakened, falling 6.3%. Department stores reported a 3.6% decrease in revenue.
The food and beverage industry also saw a slight downturn, with sales slipping 2% year-on-year.
In contrast, some sectors recorded growth. Non-specialised stores saw sales rise by 1.9%. Online and mail-order retail channels also posted an 8.9% increase, highlighting continued consumer preference for e-commerce.
