Agentic commerce, mPOS devices to lead Hong Kong retail in 2026
Frictionless payments are also predicted to be a key retail trend.
The top payment trends that will influence Hong Kong's retail market in 2026 are the rise of agentic commerce, mobile payment (mPOS) devices, and embedded checkouts in e-commerce, according to Adyen.
“Agentic commerce, where artificial intelligence (AI) agents autonomously execute purchases on behalf of consumers, is transitioning from concept to commercial reality,” the financial technology platform said in a release.
The city’s payments ecosystem will ensure every AI-driven purchase is secure and verifiable, but businesses must also maintain autonomy over payment methods and customer identity to safeguard transactions, it added.
mPOS systems will improve across retail and dining, with 44% of Hong Kong merchants stating that offering mobile payment solutions has effectively enhanced checkout efficiency and repeat spending rates.
These devices will also manage peak traffic, reduce wait times, and drive revenue efficiency.
About 34% of local merchants are actively seeking support to transition from the expiring PCI PTS 5.0 standard to the more advanced PCI PTS 6.0 framework for their payment devices, Adyen said.
In the e-commerce realm, Hong Kong merchants are moving to eliminate checkout friction as they embed native payment experiences in their own digital environment.
This will ensure that customers remain engaged from browsing to payment confirmation without interruption, it added.
