Telehealth platforms shift primary care to virtual-first models

Digital consultations cut waiting times as care shifts online.

Digital consultations and virtual pharmacy services are rapidly reshaping primary healthcare delivery, as the global telehealth market is projected to exceed $450 billion by 2030.

Pratibha Kumari Thammanabhatla, Project Manager at GlobalData, said the shift reflects a structural move towards digital-first care, where convenience and accessibility are becoming baseline expectations. One key driver is efficiency. “Digital consultations have removed the waiting times from everyday healthcare,” she said, highlighting how virtual care is eliminating traditional bottlenecks in patient access.

This transformation is particularly significant in underserved areas. “Telehealth puts that expertise on a screen in minutes,” Thammanabhatla said, pointing to improved access to specialists in rural communities and reduced geographic disparities in care delivery.

Healthcare systems are also reconfiguring service models around digital channels. Increasingly, “digital is the default and you only go in person when you actually need to be examined,” she said, signalling a shift towards virtual-first primary care. This model is redefining patient pathways and reducing reliance on physical infrastructure.

At the same time, demand for virtual pharmacy services is accelerating, driven by lifestyle changes and the rise of chronic disease management. Consumers are seeking convenience, with “millions of people… managing conditions… without the hassle of visiting a pharmacy,” pushing providers to integrate medication delivery into digital care ecosystems.

Expectations are also being shaped by e-commerce. Patients now “expect the same ease of ordering medicine as they order anything else,” Thammanabhatla said, prompting new entrants and incumbents alike to compete on speed and user experience. Rapid fulfilment models, including same-day delivery, are becoming increasingly common.

Regulatory changes are further enabling this shift. Authorities are “expanding what pharmacists can do digitally,” including allowing certain prescriptions to be issued remotely, lowering barriers to adoption and increasing service scope.

However, competition is intensifying. “If a pharmacy isn't offering a seamless digital experience, it's falling behind,” she said, underscoring how digital capability is quickly becoming a minimum requirement rather than a differentiator.
Despite rapid technological adoption, trust remains a critical factor. Patients rely on transparency, data security, and human interaction, with “the human element… still the most powerful driver of trust” in virtual care.

As telehealth scales, the challenge for providers will be balancing efficiency with credibility. The next phase of growth will depend not only on technology and regulation, but on the ability to deliver trusted, human-centred care within increasingly digital healthcare systems.
