Australia’s e-commerce market to reach over $50b in 2022: report

The market is projected to grow by 13% during the quarter. 

Australia’s e-commerce market is expected to grow by 13% to $50.2b in 2022, largely driven by the increasing shift of consumers from offline to online platforms, GlobalData reported.

“Australia’s e-commerce market has been witnessing high growth over the past few years, supported by growing internet penetration, availability of secure online payment systems, and an increase in the number of online shoppers,” Ravi Sharma, Lead Banking and Payments Analyst, GlobalData, said.

In its E-Commerce Analytics, GlobalData projected that e-commerce sales in the market will rise at a compound annual growth rate of 10.5% between 2022 and 2026 to reach $74.9b in 2026. 

“The pandemic has brought a permanent shift in consumer buying behaviour, pushing them towards online, a trend that is expected to continue in the coming months,” he said. 

More than 9 million Australian households shopped online in 2022, representing an increase of 200,000 from the previous year.
