CU launches first convenience store outlet in Malaysia

About 60% of its products are made up of South Korean goods.

CU has opened its first outlet in Malaysia as part of its overseas push, located at a shopping mall in a neighborhood in Kuala Lumpur, Yonhap reported.

South Korean goods account for 60% of all its products. The store also sells CU's private-label products such as "Korean street foods" as "tteokbokki," a snack made from rice cakes and red chili pepper sauce, and chicken "gangjeong," or sweet-and-sour fried chicken.

The opening of the 165-sqm outlet came after BGF Retail signed a brand licensing deal with Mynews Holdings in October 2020. BGF Retail said they are targeting to launch 50 CU stores in Malaysia within one year and more than 500 within five years.

Malaysia marks CU's second overseas market. BGF Retail set up six stores in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in August 2018 in line with its strategy to tap into overseas markets.
