APAC drives online grocery’s trillion-dollar growth path

Traffic congestion and long working hours push consumers toward delivery platforms.

The Asia-Pacific region holds the largest share of the global online grocery market at 58.30% in 2025, according to Polaris Market Research data.

The global online grocery market is valued at $906.01b in 2025 and is projected to reach about $8.49t by 2034, expanding at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28.20%.

The region leads global demand, supported by rising population, increased disposable income, smartphone adoption, and broadband access.

Demand is also linked to urbanisation, traffic congestion and long working hours, with key markets including China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and South Korea.

North America is projected to account for a 35.40% share by 2034, supported by e-commerce penetration and digital adoption.

Product demand varies across categories. Staples and cooking essentials accounted for the largest share at 35.62% in 2025, driven by consumption of rice, corn, wheat, oil, seasonings, spices, and sugar.

Fresh produce accounted for 42.78% of the market in 2025 due to its role in daily and weekly consumption.

The breakfast and dairy segment is projected to record a 26.9% CAGR over the forecast period, supported by rising dairy consumption in emerging economies, including India, China, and Japan.

The market operates across inventory, marketplace, quick commerce, hybrid, and subscription models.

Quick commerce uses micro-warehouses to support same-day delivery. Inventory models rely on platform-owned stock, whilst marketplace models connect consumers to multiple retailers.

Technology use includes artificial intelligence-driven demand forecasting, route optimisation, warehouse automation, and real-time tracking. Operators use these systems to manage order volumes and reduce waste.

The expansion of dark stores and micro-fulfilment centres supports faster delivery in urban areas.

Challenges include product quality control for perishable goods, logistics costs, delivery timing during peak periods, and limited coverage in remote areas.
