Starbucks Japan offer 20% discounts to bakery products

The company plans to both minimize food waste and donate part of the revenue to charity.

Some select Starbuck stores in Japan will be offering a 20% discount on bakery products several hours before closing, in a program that aims to keep unsold food from going to waste, according to a press release.

The company will donate part of the revenue of these discounted sales to Musubie, a local non-profit which provides meals for children across Japan.

The American coffeehouse chain has previously rolled out sustainability initiatives in Japan. Last May, it expressed plans to transition all 350 of its company-operated stores or about 20% of its portfolio to fully renewable energy by end-October.

As of April, the transition has been completed in 301 stores and will extend to other locations including stores in Hokkaido, Tohoku, and Okinawa.
