Coupang CEO resigns after data leak hits 33.7 million accounts
An interim chief has been appointed as police raids continue.
Coupang Inc. said its Chief Executive Officer Park Dae-jun has resigned after a data breach exposed personal information from 33.7 million customer accounts, according to an article from Yonhap News Agency.
The e-commerce group appointed Harold Rogers, chief administrative officer and general counsel of its US-based parent company, as interim CEO. The company said Rogers will lead efforts to address customer concerns and manage the fallout from the breach, with the parent firm taking an active role in overseeing the response.
Coupang confirmed on 29 November that customer data had been exposed, revising the affected number sharply higher from the 4,500 accounts initially reported to authorities on 20 November. The compromised information included names, phone numbers, email addresses and delivery addresses, while payment details and login credentials were not affected, the company said.
Police carried out a second consecutive day of raids at Coupang’s Seoul headquarters as part of an expanded investigation, while the presidential office called on the company to explain how it plans to compensate affected consumers.
