$7.3b growth expected in outdoor apparel industry by 2029

Product innovation and premiumisation are driving market growth.

The global outdoor apparel market is set to expand by $7.3b from 2025 to 2029, with a CAGR of 6.4%, according to Technavio.

The increasing demand for high-performance, fashionable, and durable outdoor clothing is driving market expansion. Consumers, especially nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers, are seeking sustainable, high-quality garments for activities like hiking, camping, running, and cycling. The industry is responding with improvements in synthetic and natural fabrics, such as breathable nylon and moisture-wicking cotton, offering better insulation and durability.

Sustainability is also a major trend, with brands incorporating recycled raw materials and eco-friendly manufacturing. Additionally, climate-responsive apparel—featuring quick-drying properties, UV protection, and smart wearables—is gaining traction as outdoor enthusiasts seek gear suited for varying weather conditions.

The market is also benefitting from the rise of adventure tourism, global travel trends, and the fusion of fashion with performance wear. Key brands dominating the sector include Champion, Patagonia, and The North Face.

The report also said automation is enhancing efficiency and safety in production. Companies use programmable logic controllers, distributed control systems, and manufacturing execution systems to streamline production and cut costs. Flexible automation allows multiple products from one machine, reducing expenses. Automated networks also enhance product quality and efficiency.

However, the report said that the aging population, projected to reach 1.5 billion by 2050, may slow market growth as older consumers engage less in outdoor activities.
