Rising awareness, income boost organic baby food market in India

79% consider an organic label important.

The demand for organic and nutritious baby food is surging in India due to the rising disposable incomes and growing awareness of nutrition and food safety, GlobalData reported.

The report said parents are increasingly prioritising quality and are willing to pay a premium for healthier options.

“Product claims such as ‘organic’ and ‘natural’ are gaining importance among Indian consumers,” said Mohammed Masiuddin Shajie, Lead Consumer Analyst at GlobalData.

A recent survey found that 79% of Indian respondents consider an organic label important, whilst 82% value natural claims.

“Consumer interest in organic and natural claims is also penetrating the baby food sector,” added Francis Gabriel Godad, Consumer Business Development Manager at GlobalData India. “Indian consumers are seeking baby food products with such claims as these are perceived to be of high quality.”

Both local and global brands are responding. Indian start-ups like Ormeal, Happa Foods, and Pristine Organics are offering organic baby food, whilst international giants such as Danone and Sprout Organics are introducing similar products to meet growing demand.

“As parents become more health-conscious and their knowledge around how different ingredients used in baby food affect their infants’ development grows, the importance of natural and nutrition-dense baby food will grow further,” Godad said.

“Product claims such as ‘made with real fruit’, ‘clean ingredients’, ‘no preservatives’, ‘non-GMO verified’, and ‘paediatrician recommended’, will gain prominence,” he added.
