Australian retailers see 20% increase in Halloween sales

One in five Australians are gearing up to celebrate the spooky season.

Many retailers in Australia are experiencing up to a 20% increase in Halloween-related merchandise sales, according to a report by the Australian Retailers Association (ARA).

One in five Australians are gearing up to celebrate the spooky season, driving a notable surge in retail sales across the country, the report noted.

Supermarkets have also reported a 25% rise in pumpkin sales, as Australians embrace the tradition of carving Jack O' Lanterns in the lead-up to 31 October.

Popular costume choices for children this year include Spider-Man, ghosts, and princesses, whilst adults are opting for classic Halloween staples such as witches, vampires, and cats.

In 2024, Australian retailers are expected to reap a $450m boost in Halloween spending.

About 38% of Australians are stocking up on candy for trick-or-treaters, whilst 37 per cent are purchasing costumes, and 32% are investing in Halloween-themed home décor.

The ARA's data said that 21% of Australians plan to celebrate Halloween, with the average participant expected to spend $93.

The top spending categories include trick-or-treating (45%), treats for trick-or-treaters (38%), costumes (37%), and home decorations (32%).

Additionally, 18 per cent of participants plan to host or attend Halloween parties.

The 35-59 age group leads the Halloween festivities, with 34% indicating they plan to celebrate, followed by 25% of Australians under 35 joining the spooky fun.
