Over half of Australians wants to eat healthier in 2024

On the other hand, 26% struggle to make healthy choices.

As Australians prepare for the New Year, over half (58%) claim that eating healthier is their top resolution, while 26% of Aussies reveal that they struggle to make healthy choices at restaurants.

According to a study by OpenTable, wherein they analysed the Top 50 Restaurants with Healthy Bites, 93% of Australians are more than set to spend more on healthier options.

Whilst choosing healthy foods is a frequent New Year’s resolution, 40% of respondents expect that they will fall back to older eating habits, even with over a quarter (27%) staying on their habits.

However, 79% of Australian respondents kept their optimism over healthy eating in 2024, compared to 2023. This is reflected in the 93% of Australians willing to spend more on healthy choice, despite around half of Australians (51%) believing that eating healthy is costly.

In addition, with vegan diets connecting to the mainstream audience, 43% have considered pursuing a vegan or vegetarian diet in 2024.

Leading Australian dietitian Susie Burrell has shared several tips to help diners navigate menus and keep their nutrition on track while eating out. Guidelines include choosing grilled food, considering side vegetables, tracking meal proportions, selecting both taste and nutritional value, and limiting indulgence of food.

“Many Aussies are doubtful they will keep to their healthy eating resolutions in 2024, with 40% reporting they're likely to give up on their resolutions before the 3-month mark. Navigating a restaurant menu to select healthier options can be as simple as adding a side of vegetables or salad to your main for a more balanced and mindful dining choice,” Burrell said.
