About 4 in 5 Hongkongers aim to resume socialising, consumption in Chinese New Year

This came as social distancing measures have been eased.

Around 80% of people in Hong Kong are looking into resuming socialising, consumption, and entertainment during the Chinese New Year as the market lifted social distancing measures.

In a statement, Kantar said around 64% of the people are planning to have dinner with relatives and friends, 46% plan to dinner out on New Year’s Eve, and 21% will travel abroad.

A total of 78% of the respondents are hoping to return to normal post-pandemic.

Meanwhile, consumers with kids are more inclined to attend social events compared to those without children, as visiting relatives and friends is the most popular activity for families with 73%, followed by dining out at 54%, travelling abroad at 27%, and joining large events at 25%.

Around 68% of the parents who want outdoor events are planning to visit museums and exhibitions.

Some are planning to stay at home due to pandemic-related worries, with 54% of them will watch TV and 44% videos alone or with their families at home.

Kantar also said that 41% of the respondents will increase local consumption with 55% believing that it is due to the festive atmosphere.

Around half of the respondents also stated that they will use their lai-see money for shopping, with 81% of them expecting to use them online, and 92% buying from physical stores.

"The report shows that there is a significant increase in consumers' willingness to travel and spend during Chinese New Year. Positive impact can be found in the catering, large-scale events, health consumption, tourism sectors etc.,” Jeff Tsui general manager of Kantar Profiles, Greater China, said.

“Brands and service providers should seize the business opportunities to create more diversified products and bring more new experiences to consumers to meet their needs in the new year," he added.
