FairPrice, A*STAR rolls out “BINgo” smart bins

This is to help promote recycling amongst Singaporeans.

The FairPrice Group and Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR) have partnered to launch smart waste sorting bins, “BINgo.”

BINgo, which uses AI, IoT, and smart sensors, is intended to help issues amongst Singaporeans over incorrect recycling practices.

“FairPrice embraces sustainability practices in our business by proactively championing and introducing efforts to nurture and protect our environment,” Jonas Kor, General Manager, FairPrice Foundation, said.

“Through this smart bins initiative, we aim to educate and imbue the importance of recycling right in the community, and inculcate the habit of reducing our environmental footprint.”

FairPrice and A*STAR have initially deployed prototypes of BINgo at the AMK Hub, NEX and FairPrice Hub.

BINgo features an AI-enabled sorting technology that separates metal cans, glass, paper, and plastic packaging that are still in recyclable conditions.

“The use of innovative manufacturing and artificial intelligence technologies in the development of BINgo will make it easier to identify recyclables and improve the efficiency of waste collection and sorting using automation,” David Low, Executive Director of A*STAR Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology, said.
