Around 60 APAC companies included in Top 250 retailers

China’s JD.com, Inc., which is the top company from the region, ranked 9th globally.

The number of companies from Asia Pacific that made it into the Top 250 Global retailers increased by 2.6% to 61 during the Financial Year 2020, according to Deloitte.

According to Deloitte’s Global Powers of Retailing 2022 report, the 61 APAC companies were able to generate $814.8b during the financial year from 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021.

Total retail revenue of the Top 250 companies reached $5.1t, increasing 5.2% year-on-year.

E-commerce specialists saw strong growth as consumer purchasing moved online. Food and drink retailers increased sales as consumption switched from the hospitality sector to in-home, and retailers in other sectors such as home improvement benefited from the consumer ‘stay-at-home’ focus,” the report read.

“This was partially offset by falling sales in retailers operating in the fashion and luxury categories; those with significant travel retail operations; and those with little e-commerce capability,” it added.

Companies from North America led the list, with 78 retailers included in the Top 250, increasing by 9.2% in the previous year. The accumulated revenue of the North American companies reached around $2.5t.

Europe followed, accounting for 90 of the companies in the list, increasing 1.1%, with a total revenue of around $1.7t. Only 11 companies from Latin America, and 10 from Africa/Middle East made it into the list, with a total revenue of $82.2b, and $71b, respectively.

China’s JD.com, Inc tops the list of companies from APAC, ranking 9th amongst the list with a total revenue of around $94.4b. It is followed by Japan’s Aeon Co. Ltd. and Seven & i Holdings Co., Ltd., which ranked 14th and 19th, respectively.

The top three were composed by United States-based companies Walmart, Inc., Amazon, Inc., and Costco Wholesale Corporation.

A company should have a revenue of at least $4.1b to qualify for the Top 250 rankings, up from $4b in the previous year, with the average company size increased to $20.4b from $19.4b.
