Food delivery is a necessity to 60% of Hong Kongers: survey

Catering to customers’ “craving” moments is key to business growth.

Some 60% of Hong Kongers have agreed that food delivery is now a necessity as they opt to stay indoors rather that dine out, Deliveroo reported.

In its Share of Stomach report that surveyed 800 consumers in Hong Kong, Deliveroo also found that 53% of Hong Kong consumers avail food delivery services due to specific cravings.

“In other words, to restaurants, making food available to customers at their moments of ‘craving’ is key to their business growth,” Deliveroo reported.

The survey also revealed that 71% of Hong Kong respondents agree that food plays an important role in their mental health with 65% saying they wish they have control over their nutrition levels.

“Food delivery has undoubtedly increased as a result of the epidemic, social distancing measures not only have impacted the F&B industry but also have influenced Hong Kongers to choose to dine in at home, as they prioritise their health and wellbeing,” Andrew Hui, General Manager, Deliveroo Hong Kong, said.

“With these insights, we can help maximise business opportunities for restaurants amidst the pandemic and provide consumers with more food choices to be delivered at their door with ease.”

At present, more than half of Hong Kongers, or 55%, have ordered more or a lot more food delivery and takeaway over the past year.

Moreover, the Share of Stomach reported that 38% of consumers value flavour and taste most when ordering food.

Other key considerations are specific dietary requirements being met (30%) and knowing the food had been prepared with expertise (26%). Social media buzz garnered the lowest score with only 20% of respondents citing it as a factor.
