Koala Sleep Japan wins Retail Product of the Year - Japan at the Retail Asia Awards 2025

Koala Mattress PLUS has redefined what it means to sleep in comfort.

Koala Sleep Japan KK has been honoured with the Retail Product of the Year - Japan award at the Retail Asia Awards 2025 for its Koala Mattress PLUS.

Known for its strong focus on sustainable materials and consumer-first design, the brand has continued to challenge norms in the sleep and lifestyle industry.

The Koala Mattress PLUS is the result of seven years of dedicated R&D, elevating the sleep experience through a smart combination of technological innovation and attention to Japanese consumer needs. Its proprietary Kloudcell™ technology — now enhanced by 20% more material than its predecessor, the Original Koala Mattress® — offers increased support, breathability, and motion isolation, all whilst maintaining the plush, cloud-like feel that has become synonymous with the Koala brand.

Its customisable first layer allows users to flip between “Medium-Firm” and “Firm” options. This adaptable feature directly responds to Japanese sleep preferences, rooted in a long-standing cultural appreciation for firmer sleeping surfaces such as futons. “The Koala Mattress addresses the need for firmness whilst introducing the comfort of mattresses to Japanese consumers,” the company said.

Adding to its seasonally adaptive design, the reversible mattress cover keeps users cool in the summer and warm in the winter, whilst also addressing consumer hygiene concerns with the introduction of a machine-washable cover—a first in Koala’s Japanese lineup.

Beyond innovation and performance, Koala Mattress PLUS also reflects the company’s broader commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. Through its ongoing partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Koala has donated over AU$3.5m to conservation efforts, a portion of which came from the sales of its sleep products.

Customer feedback about Koala Mattress PLUS has been overwhelmingly positive. An impressive 96.5% of purchasers rated the mattress 4 stars or higher, with some sharing they have been able to sleep through the night and have waved goodbye to back pains because of Koala.

Winning Retail Product of the Year - Japan is not just a recognition of a product. It is a validation of Koala Sleep Japan’s commitment to combining innovation, cultural insight, and environmental stewardship.

“Whether through enhancing material composition, introducing region-specific features, or refining ergonomic support systems, Koala remains committed to delivering an exceptional sleep experience worldwide,” the company added.
