Global eyewear trends hit local shelves amidst industry challenges
Vision Express adapts to fashion, health, and market shifts in the optical industry
The Philippine eyewear industry is rapidly evolving, with global trends influencing local preferences and market dynamics. According to Neelam Gopwani, Managing Director of Vision Express, eyewear fashion in 2024 is all about balance—lightweight frames for comfort and bold colors for style. “When it comes to trends, we really align with global standards because we carry designer eyewear. These brands are already three years ahead of trends, so we make sure that when something becomes viral, we have it here for our consumers right away,” Gopwani said.
While fashion plays a role, Vision Express remains focused on providing high-quality lenses and medical-grade eyewear. However, a key challenge facing the industry is the overuse of promotions. “Promotions are somewhat used and abused in the country. Price fighting takes away the true purpose of eyewear, which is to provide the best possible solution for the customer’s vision needs,” she explained. Instead of relying on heavy discounts, Vision Express prioritizes top-tier service, high-quality lenses from Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia, and expert care from well-trained doctors. This customer-first approach, Gopwani believes, is what ensures long-term loyalty.
Looking ahead, the optical industry is set to thrive, driven by increasing digital screen exposure. “As people, including children, spend more time in front of computers and LED screens, the demand for eyewear will continue to grow,” Gopwani noted. She emphasised that the industry must shift its focus from merely correcting vision problems to preventing them, with greater emphasis on eye health education and blindness prevention.
With eyewear becoming both a fashion statement and a medical necessity, Vision Express remains committed to innovation and service excellence, ensuring that Filipino consumers have access to the latest global trends while prioritising long-term eye care.
