AI enhances shopping experience in China’s e-commerce

Investments in AI have pushed the industry’s value beyond $68.85b.

The rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in China is reshaping the country's e-commerce landscape, according to a new report by global insights firm Canvas8.

“From virtual influencers boosting sales to AI chatbots enhancing customer interactions, the country’s embrace of AI technology is setting a global standard for innovation in e-commerce,” the report said.

The report, titled "How is AI changing personal shopping in China?", highlights how AI has become integral to China's economy, with investments pushing the industry’s value past $68.85b (CNY500b). AI applications are now widespread, particularly in retail, where platforms like Baidu and Taobao use AI to personalise shopping experiences and streamline operations.

China's embrace of AI reflects both technological advancement and cultural acceptance. According to tech entrepreneur Pascal Coppens, “In China, digital transformation has greatly benefited consumers through super apps and practical mobile solutions, fostering a high level of trust in new technologies.”

Coppens also noted that AI influencers are “highly interactive, offering novel and engaging content while seamlessly connecting to e-commerce platforms.”

Sarah Harris, an instructional designer and accessibility specialist at Break Into Tech with Charlotte Chaze, added that AI's ability to make influencers appear more authentic, whether by speaking a local language or appealing to specific generational tastes, has also contributed to this success.

As AI continues to evolve, its impact in China spans various sectors, from healthcare to agriculture, solidifying the country's commitment to leveraging technology for societal advancement.
