Vote for your new Monopoly tokens

Standfirst: Will iconic Monopoly tokens such as the top hat or Scottie dog remain in the game?

Hasbro, Inc. announced on Jan 10 the Monopoly Token Madness Vote, which leaves the fate of the eight current Monopoly tokens, including the Scottie dog, top hat, car, thimble, boot, wheelbarrow, battleship and cat all in the hands of the fans.

Until Jan 31, fans worldwide can visit www.VoteMonopoly.com to choose the eight tokens that they would like to see in the next generation of the Monopoly game. Fans can choose eight tokens from a list of more than 50 contenders. These tokens include current ones as well as new options such as a penguin, rubber ducky and bunny slipper.

Hasbro will reveal the results of the vote on World Monopoly Day, Mar 19.

“No token — not even the Scottie dog — is safe!” said Jonathan Berkowitz, Senior Vice-President, Marketing, Hasbro Gaming.

“Only time will tell if fans will decide to stay with the classics, keep a few favourites or pick an entirely new line up of tokens,” he said.

Fan-Picked Tokens in Monopoly in August

The fan-picked tokens will be updated in the Monopoly game hitting the shelves this August. Hasbro will also introduce the Monopoly Token Madness Edition which includes the current eight tokens and an additional eight golden ones from those included in the vote, available now for approximately $19.99.

Monopoly tokens have been a key element of the game since it was introduced in 1935. The car, thimble, boot, top hat and battleship were among the original set of Monopoly tokens while the Scottie dog and the wheelbarrow were added in the early 1950s.

In 2013, fans voted the cat token as the newest Monopoly game piece while the iron token was retired after receiving the lowest number of fan votes.

Monopoly is the world’s favourite family game and is enjoyed by more than 1 billion players in 114 countries.
