Danone-AQUA recognised with ESG Initiative of the Year – Indonesia in FMCG Asia Awards

Its sustainable practices won the company an award in the inaugural programme.

At its center, Danone-AQUA redefined the corporate ecosystem by designing models that create shared value for all stakeholders, including employees, shareholders, supply chains, civil society, and the planet.

Danone-AQUA boosts the use of new renewable energy and emission cuts by installing the off-grid rooftop solar power system at four of its 21 plants.

The project that started in 2017 is expected to upgrade all its plants into a self-sustaining facility in 2023. With a total capacity of over 15,000 kWp, the plants are estimated to be able to supply 21 GWh of electricity whilst reducing emissions up to 16,633 tons every year.

In its mission to reach net-zero emissions in 2050, the company has been able to gradually reduce its greenhouse gas emission by 157,597 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent from 2019 to 2020.

Setting the goal to cut its emissions by half in 2030, the company also has various ongoing programs on carbon sequestration in agriculture, forestry, and natural ecosystems; the natural conservation at the company’s water supply chains; the management of systemic risks and food and water security; as well as the provision of healthy choices of water intake from sustainable natural resources.

Danone-AQUA’s energy efficiency programs in 2019 and 2020 have driven the company to reduce 14.77% total energy use, saving up to 149,713 Gigajoules in energy-saving.

For the many efforts of Danone-AQUA, it was given the ESG Initiative of the Year – Indonesia in the recently concluded FMCG Asia Awards hosted by Retail Asia.

The awards programme celebrates the most outstanding companies in Asia Pacific's FMCG industry that have shown exemplary performance with their innovative products and initiatives.

The three major achievements noted by the judging panel touched on the various efforts the company had launched in the past few years.

The first is that the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry acknowledged Danone-AQUA’s sustainability efforts through the Waste Reduction Performance Awards.

Water conservation is an important element in the company’s sustainability efforts. The company invests in the rejuvenation of the natural ecosystem around the watersheds in the supply chain areas and in their vicinities as well as the conservation of 19 biodiversity parks and planting of 2.4 million trees.

The second achievement is that the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry awarded Danone-AQUA with 1 PROPER Award and 5 Green PROPER Awards for the company’s green initiatives.

In a bid to achieve the goals, Danone-AQUA is noted to have an initiative in plastic waste management that involves educating the consumers and empowering the waste pickers, or individuals who scavenge at dumpsites.

The embedded sustainability efforts of the company stem from its vision of “One Health, One Planet”, based on the understanding that the health of the people is interconnected with the health of Earth.
