Malaysia Airports transforms airport shopping experience with innovation and local culture
Malaysia Airports offers modern retail with cultural experiences, turning its airports into destinations of their own.
Travel expectations have changed, and along with it is the evolution of airport retail. Travellers are demanding more than speed and convenience. They want experiences that feel relevant to where they are.
Aligning its offerings with these expectations, Malaysia Airports launched retail concepts that blend modern shopping with the character and culture of Malaysia.
Its efforts include the revamped Eraman Duty Free stores that feature modern layouts, clearer product displays, and premium international brands. It also has self-checkout kiosks which enable travellers to shop quickly and conveniently during busy travel periods.

The company also implemented Sense of Malaysia, a destination-themed brand and retail concept that brings together authentic local products such as handcrafted batik and traditional food with wellness products and souvenirs to give travellers a genuine taste of Malaysia. Aside from the customers, also benefitting from this are the more than 50 local brands and small businesses who were given the opportunity to showcase their products.
These initiatives were recognised at the Retail Asia Awards 2026, with Eraman Duty Free winning the Concept Store of the Year - Malaysia and Sense of Malaysia emerging as the Travel Retailer of the Year - Malaysia.
Following the recognition, Malaysia Airports discusses how these award-winning concepts are improving the passenger experience, supporting local entrepreneurs, and changing the way people experience airport retail from the moment they arrive until they board their flight.
How have the Eraman upgrades such as the self-checkout kiosks redefined the experience for hurried international travellers?
For today's travellers, convenience is no longer a nice-to-have; it is an expectation. Our focus has been on creating a more seamless and intuitive retail experience that fits naturally into the airport journey.

The upgraded Eraman Duty Free stores were designed with traveller behaviour in mind, incorporating open layouts, clearer product zoning, stronger visual merchandising, and improved sightlines that make it easier for passengers to navigate and find what they need quickly. The introduction of self-checkout kiosks further enhances this experience by reducing queue times and enabling faster transactions, particularly during peak travel periods.
Together, these enhancements help create a frictionless retail environment where travellers can make the most of limited dwell time without compromising on discovery or shopping enjoyment. Ultimately, it is about removing barriers and giving passengers greater control, convenience, and confidence throughout their airport journey.
How does the Sense of Malaysia concept bridge local craftsmanship with global standards to provide an authentic Sense of Place?
Sense of Malaysia was created from the belief that airports should reflect the character of their destination, not simply replicate a generic retail environment.
The concept brings together some of Malaysia's most distinctive products, brands, and cultural expressions, from hand-drawn batik and woven songket to locally crafted food products, wellness offerings, and artisan-made souvenirs. At the same time, these products are presented within a modern travel retail environment that meets international standards in merchandising, store design, and customer experience.
What makes the concept unique is that it allows travellers to engage with Malaysia's culture in a meaningful and accessible way, whether through artisan demonstrations, curated storytelling, or products that reflect the country's diverse heritage. It transforms shopping from a transaction into an experience, creating a stronger emotional connection between travellers and the destination.
For us, Sense of Malaysia is about ensuring passengers leave with more than a purchase; they leave with a memorable impression of Malaysia itself.
How does Malaysia Airports balance local SME participation with international brands to create a discovery-led shopping environment?
We do not see local and international brands as competing propositions. In fact, the most compelling airport retail environments today are those that successfully bring both together.
International brands provide familiarity and help meet the expectations of global travellers, whilst local brands offer authenticity, cultural relevance, and a unique sense of discovery. Our role is to curate the right balance between the two.
Through platforms such as Sense of Malaysia, we have provided more than 50 Malaysian brands and entrepreneurs with access to travel retail, allowing them to showcase their products to a global audience. At the same time, these local offerings sit alongside internationally recognised names across beauty, lifestyle, confectionery, and specialty retail categories.
This creates a richer and more engaging retail ecosystem where travellers can enjoy the brands they know whilst also discovering something uniquely Malaysian. The strong growth we have seen in gifts and souvenirs demonstrates that travellers increasingly value products and experiences that reflect the culture and identity of the places they visit.
What does winning Concept Store of the Year and Travel Retailer of the Year at the Retail Asia Awards 2026 mean for Malaysia Airports?
These awards are a significant affirmation of the direction Malaysia Airports has taken in reimagining airport retail as an experience-driven and destination-led ecosystem.
The recognition reflects the collective efforts of our teams, retail partners, concessionaires, and local brands who have worked together to elevate the airport experience for travellers. It acknowledges our commitment to innovation, from introducing more intuitive retail concepts and digital solutions to creating platforms that celebrate Malaysian culture and entrepreneurship.
More importantly, the awards reinforce our belief that airport retail can play a meaningful role in shaping how travellers experience a destination. Whether through the convenience of our upgraded duty-free environments or the authenticity of Sense of Malaysia, our goal is to create memorable experiences that resonate with passengers long after they leave the airport.
As we look ahead, this recognition motivates us to continue raising the bar and positioning Malaysia's airports as world-class gateways that combine international standards with a distinctly Malaysian identity.
